Baptisms

Baptism or Christening? It’s one and the same

We are happy to offer baptism to children, young people and adults.  The Church of England has a helpful website with advice on what to expect if you want to have your child, or yourself, baptised.

When do baptisms take place?
During the service the child or adult is welcomed into the family of the Church, therefore we like to conduct baptisms at one of our regular 11.00am Sunday morning services.  However, we acknowledge that it is not always convenient or practical.  St Margaret’s has seating for about 100 people, but with a regular Sunday morning congregation of 50 – 60 people that only leaves room for about 40 people in the baptism party.  If you are expecting more than that we can offer a special service that normally takes place at 12.45pm on a Sunday, but we will try to accommodate your wishes if you are looking for a different time.

Do you have to live in Downham or Ramsden Heath?
Normally baptism should take place in the parish in which you live, but if you have a family connection with our parish, we are happy to discuss baptism at St Margaret’s with you.

How much does it cost to be baptised?
Nothing – There are no charges for baptism, however like any other church service we will pass around a collection plate and we hope that you and your guests will be generous to support the life and work of the Church in Downham and Ramsden Heath.

I don’t come to church regularly.  Can I still have my child baptised?
Yes. However, you should be aware that the baptism service requires you to make solemn promises in the presence of God and your family & friends, to turn to Christ and bring your child up in the family of the Church. We encourage those considering baptism to attend some services beforehand so that we can get to know each other. See our Services or Calendar page for details. If you are not used to attending church you may find our Family Service, held on the first Sunday of the month, the most helpful for you. This is an informal service designed to help families with young children worship in a relaxed way.

How do I arrange a baptism?
Please use the 'Contact us' link below to email us saying that you wish to arrange a baptism.  Please give your name, postcode, contact details and when you would like the ceremony to take place.  A member of the ministry team will then contact you to discuss the arrangements. Alternatively, come along to one of our services and talk to one of the ministers there.
